Using MS Edge with Conquest 3

With the recent release of the updated Microsoft Edge browser, we have tested the capability to replace the use of Microsoft Internet Explorer (I.E.) with the new Edge “Chromium” browser. The new version of the Edge browser supports and runs Conquest 3 in ‘Compatibility mode’, sometimes also called “Internet Explorer” mode.

Use of the new version of Edge allows Conquest Customers to move away from the need to only use Microsoft I.E. with Conquest 3 and extends the ability to run Conquest 3 in the New Microsoft Edge browser in Compatibility mode until 2023.

Background notes

Microsoft Edge is a browser written by Microsoft that had its first release in 2005. The original version of the Edge browser used a native Microsoft rendering engine.

In October 2020 Microsoft has begun the rollout of a new version of the Edge Browser.

The new version uses a new rendering engine based on the open-source Chromium rendering engine. This update is being delivered via the standard Windows Update process.

As the new version of Edge has now been released the older version of Edge has become known as ‘Legacy Edge’.

To determine exactly which version is being used, conduct a check from within Windows, Edge versions numbered 85.0.564.68 or higher use the new Chromium rendering engine.

In addition to rolling out the new version of Edge, Microsoft has also made end of life announcements about Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer has been required to run the Silverlight based Conquest 3.

Internet Explorer will not be supported after XXXXX.

Conquest 3 will continue to operate in the new Edge Chromium Browser in Compatibility mode.

This capability will be supported by Microsoft until at least 2023.

Microsoft Browser Support Announcements

Microsoft have recently announced they are removing support for Microsoft Internet Explorer (I.E.).

Conquest 3, our platform written in the Microsoft Silverlight application, and traditionally requiring the Microsoft I.E. Browser can now be run in the new Edge Browser, running in Compatibility or IE mode.

Microsoft has detailed their future support arrangements for Internet Explorer in this document which has been updated by Microsoft in October 2020.

Specifically, Microsoft have added the following statement:

“What if my enterprise line-of-business (LOB) application has a dependency on a version of Internet Explorer that reached end of support?

In order to ease the migration from Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge offers Internet Explorer mode, providing backward compatibility and enabling customers to run many legacy web applications. Microsoft is committed to supporting Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge through the duration of the operating system's lifecycle.”

The Windows 10 operating system support extends to 2023 and Microsoft Edge support in Compatibility mode or sometimes called Internet Explorer mode” will run to 2023.
