Create an Asset Type as follows:
• Click on the Knowledge Base in the Navigation Window
• In the Asset Type Explorer select an existing Asset Type, to be the parent of your new Asset Type. See Navigate the Asset Type Explorer for details
• Click the New > Asset Type Task
• Enter and select the data that will define the Asset Type. See Asset Types for more details
• Select an Attribute Set that you have previously created to suit this Asset Type, which will set the Attributes and User Field labels. See How To Maintain Asset Attribute Sets for more details
• Click Save
Things to be aware of:
The Knowledge Base Hierarchy is logically structured around the Types of Asset data that your organisation is concerned with managing e.g. Buildings, Sewers and Roads. It is not the same as the Asset Hierarchy, which is built around the locality and names of your physical Assets.
You should restrict the planning and creation of the Knowledge Base Hierarchy to a few knowledgeable users. This will give precision and consistency to the way it is organised
Other than Attributes Sets, a clear understanding of Valuation and Works Management, will help you to determine the extent of the Asset Type Hierarchy breakdown:
• A single Asset Type called “Concrete Drainage Pipe” could be created with the intention that the diameter is recorded as a Dimension, along with length and depth, which is quite valid if the pipe is not to be valued. However, if it is to be valued, because replacement rates for pipes are normally based on diameter, it is best to have an Asset Type for each diameter of pipe, all sharing the same Attribute Set
• From a Works Management perspective, some Assets of the same Asset Type could be required to have quite different maintenance regimes because of environmental factors, so again it may be better to use separate Asset Types, all sharing the same Attribute Set
